Mary Vann Wilkins Eslinger was born in Rose Hill, North Carolina, to Stephen Vance and Clara Evelyn Gill Wilkins.
She was married to the late John E. Eslinger, also of Morehead City.
Mary Vann was educated in the Duplin County Schools and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The Woman's College, now UNC-Greensboro.
She attended the University of Wisconsin on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and received a master's degree in American Studies.
She was an educator-a teacher in high school, college, and on public television and was for many years a teacher of teachers.
She retired as a social studies consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Mary Vann was a lifelong Unitarian-Universalist, a lifelong Democrat, a committed community activist, a superb quilter, a world traveler, and a gracious hostess to people from all over the world.
She loved to travel.
A memorial will be held on Tuesday, December 2, at 11:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Coastal Fellowship in Morehead City with Chaplain John Biggers officiating.
