2006.09.09.SAT.AM-SUN.AM - 2006 Eastern NC MS150 Bike Tour - This was a busy weekend. Sunday afternoon was my dear brother-in-law's memorial service.  Many of his friends and family were in Morehead City for the weekend.  I had already signed up for the MS150 bike tour and had many donations so I got up early Saturday AM and drove to New Bern for the Saturday Tour.  This year we only had two folks who returned from the team last year, myself and David Sakell.  We saw George Hess while waiting for the start of the ride and he looked ready to ride.  I also ran into Amanda from last year who had a friend along for the ride.

At the second rest stop of the tour (I rolled past the first w/o stopping) I saw Sharon (#8) again she is about 65 now and had just returned from an international triathlon in Switzerland (she was on the century loop and told me she was doing the century on Sunday too). That lady is a machine and a wonderful person, a few years ago we rode part of the century together and I recall that day could best be characterized as a rolling 'bike-wash'!

At the lunch rest stop I saw Gary Rolkie and old friend who was in charge of the h/w engineering group at the first computer company I worked for back in 1982 (CTi Data) Gary has ridden every single Eastern NC MS150 ride (18 in a row).  Gary was also on the century loop and was busy wolfing down a banana and some other food and after I was back on the road for a mile or two here came this pace line past me and there was Gary yelling out "Go For It Zach!" as they disappeared in a cloud of dust down the road.  I think I may have passed them again while they were on their second '12.5 mi. century loop' of the tour but for all I know they got back to the start/finish line before I did.

I had a pita-and-hummus-slices for lunch and when I got back to the start/finish line there was chicken-euros on the grill --- excellent choices for food this year.

On Sunday I did my 75 mile loop around Carteret County, this weekend was a family weekend and many of Evelyn's family were in Morehead City for, my dear brother-in-law, John Eslinger's memorial service.  I was able to get on the road by 6:45am Sunday morning.  As I topped the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge from Morehead City to Beaufort I could see this little sliver of orange light peeping over the horizon --- Sunrise.

I continued on through Beaufort on US70 East.  Where US70 East turns right to go to Cedar Island I continued on for a couple of miles to Laurel Road where I turned west toward NC101 (The-Back-Road-To-Havelock).  After riding over the Intracoastal Waterway again and after crossing over the Marlow Canal, a mile or so beyond the waterway, I turned south to take The-Back-Road-To-Newport.  In Newport I took old US70 a few blocks toward the east across the Newport River and then turned southeast on Hibbs Road.

Hibbs Road goes all the way to NC24, my first rest-stop.  I purchased a litre of water, can of Red-Bull, filled up my water bottles drank the can of Red-Bull and ate a banana.  I was ready to roll again headed south on NC24 toward Cape Carteret.

The wind was out of the NE a beautiful cool morning and I was heading SW and made good time all the way to NC58.  At the NC24-NC58 intersection I turned south to cross the Intracoastal Waterway a third time and rode onto Brogue Banks.  On the way up the bridge (I was around 40 miles into the ride and in my lowest gear just taking it easy on the upslope). I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a cyclist approaching, he was closing in on me.  As he got near I waved him on and as he blew past me standing up on his pedals he shouted back a cheery "Good Morning".  Well, you know, nothing is more satisfying to a cyclist than passing another cyclist, on a hill, I know I made his day.

As I turned east and headed up the island on NC58 the first mile marker I noticed said 19 miles.  I mentally added 11 (3 to get to Fisher Street from the AB causeway and 4 each way to Fort Macon).  That would put me slightly over 75 miles.  So I spent some time figuring and felt like I could avoid going all the way to the Ft Macon State Park parking lot before turning around for home.

One the way up the island I noticed another rider coming up on me when he got close he yelled out, "Are you going to enter the Senior State Games this year!".  I allowed how as I was not but that I did participate in other state sponsored cycling events (CycleNC) and I found out that this fellow competes in the Senior State Games and is in the 65 to 69 year group and could not wait till his 70th birthday when he would be the youngest in his age group and could win some races again.  I told him I was on my second 75 mile ride of the weekend and he was impressed. He allowed that he had never ridden his bike 75 miles in one go.  When we finished talking he zoomed off down the road leaving me in a cloud of dust.  That was amazing, he was 10 years older than I and looked to me like he was in much better physical shape.

I made it down to where I thought I could turn around (very near Ft Macon) and headed back to the AB causeway and over the Intracoastal Waterway a fourth time.  I've named this route the 'Four Bridges Ride'.  Heading up that bridge I met two cyclists and a runner going the other way on the other side of the bridge.  They had the wind at their backs and I had by this time about a 12-15 mph breeze in my face.

I got back to Fisher Street in just 5 hrs 45 min on the bike and 6 hrs 15 min on the road which was 13.0 mph avg right on the button and felt grand about it.  My actual mileage was 74.80 miles (I guess I could have gone one more tenth of a mile toward the Ft Macon parking lot).

I was in plenty of time for John's memorial service which was the best memorial service I have ever attended.  Many of John's old newspaper buddies were there and some gave talks about their times with John. Sally, the minister, presented the service as a series of talks about John by John's friends interspersed with some of John's favorite music.  At the beginning of the service John was piped-ashore by an old Navy boson, and one of the tunes that Ann Odell played was Eternal Father Strong to Save. Since one of the things that John and I have in common (other than marrying two beautiful sisters) was that we were both in Naval Aviation; so this was, for me, particularly poignant. We all together sang a Unitarian hymn set to the tune of Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, one of John's favorite tunes.  I will miss John and consider my life more complete for knowing him and am sure that he will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

NOTES:

2006.12.24.SUN.PM - 2/3 Of North Raleigh Loop
- Today, because I was leaving at 2:30pm, I decided to ride for one hour and turn around and come back giving myself about a 20 mile ride.  I rode on the greenway to the intersection behind Crabtree Valley Mall then up the hill on Blue Ridge Road then onto Ebenezer Church Road.  Then on to just before the little dip where the road crosses US70 that was the turn around location.  Given that it took me about 55 minutes to get to that place and 1:40 total I think it can be said that the way out is up hill and the way back is down hill.

2006.12.17.SUN.PM -
An Art Museum/Greenway Ride - I headed up the hill behind Crabtree Valley Mall from the greenway and instead of turning right on Duraleigh Road I turned left on Blue Ridge.  At the Art Museum I entered the Reedy Creek Greenway and headed for the Beltway Bridge.  From there I kept on till I got to the corner of Hillsborough and Gorman St.  I turned back north on Faircloth and heading up to Wade Avenue.  I took the 'back-way' around Ridge Road shopping center past the All Star Bike Shop and on to Ridge Road.  I turned down Glen Eden and went all the way to Glenwood where the road changes over to Granville. At Pasquotank I took a right onto Transylvania and then another right onto Orange then left onto Rutherford and then left onto Scotland then on down to Saint Mary's which changes over to Lassister Mill. Once across the creek I took the Greenway all the way past the Great Crabtree Swamp to Raleigh Road and the back to North Blvd via Crabtree Blvd  Once back on North Blvd I took Hodges St back to Atlantic Ave where I rejoined the Greenway back to Lassister Mill where I retraced my route to the corner of Allegany and Transylvania.  On Allegany back to Yadkin then on up the hill to Davidson Street and Home.  The route is about 20 miles.

2006.12.16.SAT.PM - My North Raleigh Loop Ride
- This ride is about 50km.  I made this ride in about 2.5 hours.  When you apply a little arithmetic then two of these rides come out to be 100km in 5.0 hours.  If you then multiply that by 12 you get 1200km in 60 hours.  If you throw in 30 hours of rest time you get 1200km in 90 hours.  So the question now becomes, if my 'pace' remains the same about 12.5 mph can I train up enough between now and next August 20th (eight months) so that I can repeat today's ride with 37 minutes rest per ride on average 24 times in a row?  That is my goal.

2006.10.01.SUN.AM - 2006.10.07.SAT.AM - The 2006 Edition Of Cycle North Carolina (The Five Sisters Tour Of North Carolina) -
This was my sixth CycleNC tour.

On Sunday the first day we left from Banner Elk NC.  I left 1/2 hour before the "mass start" which would have included a climb that would have left me at the absolute end of the ride.  The first part of the ride also featured a decent that was basically three miles of vertical road.  I was glad that I was basically alone for that bit.  When I saw a sign that said "All Trucks And Busses Turn Around Here You Can NOT Negotiate This Road." I knew they were not kidding about the decent (over 1400 feet in three miles).  We rode though Boone and headed for Todd NC where we rode the entire length of the "Todd Railroad Grade Road" along the New River.  Then onto NC16 (and some really big climbs to reach it from the New River valley) where we did a seven mile decent to the level of North Wilkesboro.  Sunday night camped at the  Doc and Merle Watson Amphitheater and we listened to The North Carolina Thumbpickers a good bluegrass band.

On Monday we had sixty miles of rolling hills from North Wilkesboro to Clemmons NC.  We played "tag" with US421 most of the way.  The weather was perfect for cycling.  Not too hot, and light winds.  We camped the night at a park in Clemmons called Tanglewood a nifty place, but sort of out in the middle of nowhere.  We rode past the home of Junior Johnson just outside of Yadkin NC, quite a place, it looked like an English country manor house.

On Tuesday we had seventy miles of rolling piedmont hills, a few steep ones (up and down) from Clemmons NC to Burlington NC.  The ride passed through Thomasville NC.  The mayor shook my hand and gave me a pin.  There was a lady who gave each biker a hug and one just behind her that a little vibrator machine to give you a neck massage.  And some of the ladies of Thomasville made some vegetable and some vegetable-beef soup.  I had a cup of the veggie and as I walked back to my bike I was interviewed by the local TV station.  We also had a rest stop this day at a dairy farm that made their own ice cream and everyone who wanted one got a cup, I had vanilla :o).  This day's ride ended at the water reservoir for the city of Burlington and we had a bluegrass band called "Occasional Grass".  Interesting enough there was no water for the shower truck at this stop so they drove in a big tanker full of water and it was a challenge to get it hooked up to the shower truck, the Burlington Fire Dept sent a pumper truck to save the day.

On Wednesday we rolled along through the Uwharrie Mountains from Burlington To Holly Springs.  We skipped Chicken Bridge Road and instead crossed the Haw River at Bynum on an old concrete bridge that probably saw Model-T cars pass over it and is now restricted to bikes and pedestrians.  We then had the 'honor' of climbing out of the Haw River Valley along Bynum Ridge Road.  At one point along the ride you could look back and see the Uwharries stretched out along the horizon.  We made our way across Jordan Lake (which dams the Haw River) on US64 then turned off to head to Harris Lake the cooling lake for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Reactor.  We rode into Holly Springs along Avent Ferry Road.  This night I spent in a bed at Paul and Laviece's new house (sister number three along the route --- see below).  Additionally Laviece did THREE loads of laundry for me and I reduced my load of junk by two boxes full which was to the level it should have been from the start.

On Thursday we had a nice fifty mile ride from Holly Springs to Johnston County Community College in Smithfield. Laviece rode with me today and we had a grand time of it.  For supper we had some 'serious' BBQ pork (eastern NC style) fried chicken, cold slaw, boiled potatoes and hushpuppies.  Because Paul picked Laviece up at the end of the ride I had the opportunity to visit a store and get a razor and some Alieve, I was looking a bit 'scruffy' I suppose.

On Friday we rode seventy miles from Smithfield to Kinston.  The day was overcast and between LaGrange and Kinston I finally got a chance to try out my rain jacket and new bike 'fenders'.  They are 'Race-Blade' fenders and they worked just fine.  When I arrived at the nature park in Kinston we had a pretty heavy shower but I had not yet put up my tent and by the time I finished pitching my tent the rain had ended and no more fell that night.  Sadly the shower truck ran out of propane and I took a cold shower (later I found out that only one of the shower trucks had run out of gas and I could have had a hot shower if I had only wandered next door to the other truck, oh well, I now know how to take a really fast shower).

Saturday the final day was a cool cloudy ride from Kinston to Emerald Island.  I kept my arm and leg warmers and my rain jacket on the entire way.  Once at the end of the ride the sun came out and we had warm sunny time of it for the end of the ride party.  This was the third time I had finished a bike ride at the Travel Campground at the end of Emerald Island (the other two were MS150 rides).  I even met the mayor of Emerald Island.  And I got two brand new reflective 'snap-bracelets' for my ankles when I do my brevet rides next spring.

I call this ride the The Five Sisters Tour Of North Carolina because Jane (Evelyn's sister lives in Boone) Mary my sister lives in Burlington, My sister Laviece lives in Holly Springs, Gwin, my sister, lives in Mount Olive (five miles down the tracks from the rest stop in Dudley on the way to Kinston) and Mary Vann lives in Morehead City at the other end of Emerald Island.

Here is a nice table of the distances, and elevations as recorded by my good friend John Tracey on his GPS

2006.09.26.TUE.PM - Well so much for theoretical minimum walking times for 2 miles!  This is truly astonishing.  I have been loosing some weight (down about 20-25 lbs from my maximum) and that must be what was responsible for the fast walk.

2006.09.23.SAT.AM - Fisher Street Bogue Banks Ft Macon Ride
- A beautiful Saturday morning and a nice two hour spin.

2006.09.17.SUN.AM - Fisher Street Bogue Banks Ft Macon Ride
- A beautiful Sunday morning and a nice two hour spin.

2006.09.16.SAT.AM - Blair Farms High School Greenway Loop Ride -
A nice one hour Saturday morning spin.

2006.09.09.SAT.AM-SUN.AM
- 2006 Eastern NC MS150 Bike Tour - See Above

2006.09.03.SUN.AM
- North Raleigh Loop Ride (CCW) - A beautiful Sunday morning ride.  I left at 8am and there were practically no cars on the road, a very quiet sleepy labor day Sunday.

2006.09.02.SAT.AM
- North Raleigh Loop Ride (CW) - A beautiful Saturday morning ride.  No clouds in the sky.  Temp in the 70s.  A cool breeze out of the north. When I got back home I felt fine, went out and picked up the sticks that were blown off the trees by the tropical storm. Yesterday I signed up for the 2006 edition of Cycle North Carolina

2006.09.01.FRI.PM -
Well I was heading back to work.  Tropical Storm Ernesto was heading out of the state having gone east of I95 and basically giving Raleigh the skip (very good).  I could not resist a 'rain-walk' at Lake Lynn.  The temp was about 68 and I had my rain jacket on as much to keep warm as to keep off the light sprinkle.  I sort of 'hurried-along' for this walk and even got to the point I was warm enough to unzip the jacket and push up the sleeves.  I'm sure I kept my heart rate up the whole walk and when I passed the one mile mark at 15:01 I decided to try and keep the same pace to see if I could go at or under a 3:45 sec average per 1/4 mile.  And I did!

2006.08.25.FRI.AM - Brogue Banks Out And Back Ride
- I left Fisher St and rode to Ft. Macon then back down the island.  When I got to the bridge intersection I had been 11 miles.  When I was at Ft. Macon I had exactly 7 Miles so this means that it was 4 miles to the fort from the intersection and three miles back to Fisher St (that's 11 miles all together).  So this means that I could continue down the Island for a certain distance and subtracting some fixed number from my mileage and determine exactly where to turn around so that when I arrived back at fisher street I would have ridden 40.0 miles.  And I figured it incorrectly! What I did in my head was this:  "Well it is 3 miles from the bridge intersection to Fisher St. and 4 miles from the bridge intersection to Ft Macon so that makes it 8 miles round trip to Ft Macon from the bridge intersection.  I went on to calculate, I need to turn around at precisely 28 miles because 20-8 is 20 and 20+20 is forty".  Well that was all well and good but incorrect because it left out the 3 miles from the bridge intersection to Fisher St and if I did that I would have ridden .  What I then started to do was figure thusly: "Since I've already ridden 11 miles when I am at the bridge intersection then all I need to do is subtract 11 from my currently mileage take that number and double it add back in the 11 miles and make that number come out to be 40, Doing this calculation gave 24.5 miles because half 24 minus 11 is 13 doubled is 26 plus 11 is 36 plus 3 back to fisher St. is 39 plus the .5 (doubled) gives 40.  Well I had already ridden 25.7 miles when I discovered the error so that's why the mileage was over 40 miles.  Here is a gmaps pedometer track of the routed.

2006.08.23.WED.AM -
Wow!  I'm thinking those two days of riding SAT/SUN and two days off MON/TUE and all that Glucosamine Sulfate is starting to kick in.  The fastest walk of the year and 5th fastest of all time.  And I felt I could crank it up a bit more given that the temp was in the high 80s low 90s.  I think "I'm Back!". which is great!!!

2006.08.19.SAT.AM - 2006.08.20.SUN
Fisher Street To US101 To Old Wineberry To New Port To Hibbs Road To NC24 To Bridges Street To Fisher Street.  This is a ride that I mapped out some time ago and have been really wanting to do.  This morning I got the chance!  And it was everything I thought it would be.  The weather cooperated and when I got back to Fisher Street around 11am the temperature was not too bad.  I started out at 7:30am and if I could have left an hour earlier it would have been even better.  Here is a graphic and a queue sheet for this ride:  QUEUE SHEET. Sunday morning I did the same route except I rode the loop in a counter clockwise direction and got off about 1/2 hour earlier.  The wind was stronger and since I did the ride on Sat I was tired when I got back to the Inland Waterway Bridge, I pulled over just before the bridge drank the rest of my water, stretched and hit the road, at the top of the bridge I met a biker coming the other way, he was pushing his bike up the bridge so I felt I was doing ok since I managed to be peddling.

2006.08.13.SUN.PM - Davidson Street to Commons Drive Holly Springs - When I got back from Morehead city on Sunday I found a new pledge to this year's MS150 bike tour.  In celebration I got on my bike and rode down to Holly Springs to Laviece and Paul's new house.  Here is a GMap-Pedometer.com track of the route.

2006.07.02.SUN.AM - 2006.07.03.MON.AM - 2006.07.06.THU.AM -
Le Tour de Topsail Island - This was the family week at the beach and Laviece and John and I got in some very nice bike rides up and down the island.

2006.06.11.SUN.AM - The 'Complete Greenway Ride'.  Today I set out on Roberts Trek 6000 Mountain Bike with my GPS/HEART-MONITOR/CYCLE-COMPUTER.  I had on my riding pants but put on shorts over them and my CycleNC Bike Jersey.  I headed down Yadkin Drive and got on the greenway and headed up to Crabtree Valley Mall and on under Edwards Mill Road to the end of the greenway.  After turning around and riding back I set off for Shelly Lake and on to Longstreet.  Then back down the other side of Shelly Lake and on toward Root Elementary School near Lassiter Mill.  After crossing Crabtree Creek on Lassiter Mill Road I got back on the greenway and headed toward Wake Med.  At the end of the ride I went up the hill to the CVS pharmacy and got a bottle of water and a bottle of GatorAid and headed back.  When I got back to the Yadkin Drive Crabtree Creek area I was feeling strong and decided to tackle the hill going up to the North Hills Tennis Courts in North Hills Park.  I did then headed back up Davidson Street to the house.  A great ride.  I was out on the road for 3 1/2 hours and rolling for 3 of those hours. Here is a web page that has the GPS track of the ride and some pictures I took with my cell phone while riding: "Greenway-Ride".

2006.06.03.SAT.AM - Another 'Three Peninsula Ride'.  Today was the 600K Brevet Ride with the NC Bike Club Randonneurs.  Well I did not do ANY of the brevet rides this year but I have high hopes for the rest of this year leading up to the brevet rides of next year that I will be in shape to breeze through the lot of them and then organize a trip to France in August of 2007 for the PBP ride.  That's my plan, we'll see if it happens.  I think I'll need to get my right knee worked on between now and then to make this a success.

2006.05.29.MON.AM -
A nice 'Three Peninsula Ride'. And a grand end to a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. This morning was perfect for a bike ride, not to hot, or too windy, I needed to get back to Fisher street to say good bye to Ginny and her friend who were off for DC so I did not just reverse the ride when I got to Fort Macon and do it in reverse.  If I had it would have been a 38 mile ride, and I intend to do just that for this ride sometime soon.

2006.05.21.SUN.PM - A Fantastic Greenway Ride.  The Raleigh Greenway System just opened up greenway links that head east down Crabtree Creek.  From my house on Davidson Street I head down Yadkin Drive to Crabtree Creek and get on the greenway heading east and ride for 9.2 miles without ever getting off the greenway.  A beautiful ride featuring covered areas that go under railroad trestles, trestles that climb out of Crabtree Creek Gorge, and a long elevated areas over a swamp/lake.  I would up at the CVS Pharmacy just across from Wake Medical Center.  In the future they are going to extend this thing all the way to the Neuse River.  And eventually west to Umstead Park.  That will be something.  I'll bring my GPS and camera with me on another of these rides and post the route and pictures.

2006.05.13.SAT.AM -
A Short Ride - I took off for my 'big-loop-ride' around the county and only got about 7 miles down the road before I had to turn around, my knees had given out.  I'm not sure what is going on but I'll figure it out. Here is a GPS track of the short ride.

2006.04.15.SAT.AM - (Counter Clockwise N Raleigh Loop Ride) - For some reason I went to bed really early last night and found myself up at 4am and as the day began to dawn I prepared to ride.  I left at 7:15am and returned at 9:30am. a nice ride.  And I am now working on a computer application that uses the Google Maps API to be a "Bicycle Route Queue Sheet Design Tool".  I have the display part working (i.e. after you design the route and save the data set the part that reads the data set back in and displays it is working).  Take a look at the link and see what you think (you have to click 'load' to see the saved route).

2006.04.02.SUN.PM - (My Good Old N Raleigh Loop Ride) -
I got new shoes yesterday, an early birthday present from Evelyn, Ginny, Anna and Robert and I switched over the cleats and was getting ready to go for walk and Evelyn said, "Aren't you going to try out your new shoes?" Well now, given this weekend is the absolutely most beautiful weekend of the year so far I put on my riding shorts and new shoes and hit the road.  I kept thinking, "Well I can just ride on the greenway a bit, and I can turn around any time now, and before I knew it I was pulling into the gas station at the corner of NC-50 and Norwood road my 1/2 way point, buying a small can of 'Red-Bull' and 1.0L bottle of water and getting ready to go the rest of the way, which I did!  And excellent ride.  Here is a link to the Google maps-pedometer route.  And here is the Queue Sheet for this ride.

2006.03.26.SUN.AM -
(A DVD VIDEO) - This is billed as a 2 mile brisk walk.  You walk in place and also do: side steps, knee lifts, back kicks, front kicks, and using a rubber band do some arm stretching.  It gets your heart rate up and it gets some muscles going that do not get going usually, and I did it on a nice soft cushioned rug so all in all a most successful workout.  Additionally because there was frost on the car and my ribs are 'stove-in' from an activity at work last week I gave the NCBC Spring Bicycle Rally a pass this year.

2006.03.20.MON.AM - (A WALK TO WORK) -
This day the company had a meeting that started at 7:30AM and was being held in a hotel near Crabtree Valley Mall.  This hotel is right near a bike path that I have been on many times so I decided to walk to work this morning.  I left about 7:10AM and arrived at 7:40AM so the walk was just about a 2 mile walk, my usual lunch walk.  Here is a link to the walk using Google maps.

2006.03.12.SUN.AM - (The Three Peninsula Ride) -
We left at 9AM and headed up Fisher St to 24th St to the AB bridge and over the bridge and up to Ft Macon.  Then back over the bridge and out Bridges St to the bike path and the High School.  Then down Country Club Road to Blair Farms Point then back on Blair Farms Pkwy to 20th St and back to Fisher St.  What a super Sunday morning ride.

2006.03.11.SAT.AM - (The Two Peninsula Ride) -
Laviece and Paul came down to the beach this weekend.  This is Laviece's spring break and we set out from Fisher street then up to 20th street then over to Blair Farm Point then back along Country Club Road then onto the Crab Point loop then down to the High School and onto the bike path back to the Hospital.  Then across to the NC Marine Fisheries department past the UNC Chapel Hill Marine Biology department and then into the NC Wildlife Access Boat launch area and onto Evans Street.  Then all the way down to Sheppard Street and down to the State Port Authority and back across the peninsula to Fisher street.  In the afternoon we explored the potential "Four Peninsula Ride" which will start at Fisher Street go over the bridge toward Beaufort then up  NC101 to the "Marlow Canal" then wind around to Newport then over to NC24 and back to Blair Farms then over to Fisher Street then onto Fort Macon and back to Fisher Street.

2006.03.06.MON.PM - (Lake Lynn Clockwise Walk) -
I had a lunch meeting Friday and Saturday and Sunday just did not get out of the house to walk or anything else.  Today at Lunch I was feeling pretty good (three days rest).  So I cranked it up and walked quickly the whole time.  My HR hit 80% of MAX a few times and I never got below 130.  The average 1/4 time was my best for this year 3:49 and only 10 seconds per 1/4 mile from my all time best of 3:39.5.  The key is the rest my feet are just so sore these days it is difficult to crank it up.  I'm trying some stretching before I walk to see if that helps.  The other thing I suppose would be to see if some sort of shoe inserts would help.  Of course the weight is the biggest thing if I could drop 20-30 lbs that would be the most help of all.

2006.02.25.SAT.AM - (Fisher Street - Blair Point - High School - Fort Macon Loop Ride)
A chilly ride, the temp started out in the high 30s low 40s but hit high 40s before it was over.  When I got back to the Atlantic Beach bridge I decided to go out to Fort Macon and it was a grand tour.  I took some time at the shelter that overlooks the Beaufort inlet to let my toes thaw out a bit and was fine on the way back over the bridge to Morehead City.  I thought about just going in complete reverse to get back to Fisher Street which would have put the ride at about 40 miles, perhaps next time I do this ride I'll do that.

2006.02.07.TUE.PM - (Work - Food Lion - Work Loop Walk
Here is a nice 2.4 mile walk from my office down to the shopping center Food Lion store where I can pickup a sandwich and return to work, not only getting lunch but also getting in a good walk.  It certainly is not as scenic as the Lake Lynn Walk but it has the advantage of also being around two miles and I do not need a car to get to the walk start/stop location.  I mapped out the walk using the Google Maps Pedometer application and here is a link to the actual walk.
And here is a graphic of the map of the walk.

2006.02.04.SAT.PM -
(Fisher Street - Blair Point - High School - Loop Ride) My first bike ride of the year.  The theory was that walking two miles at lunch would keep me in good aerobic shape so when I do ride my bike I will feel just fine.  And if today's ride is any indication of whether that theory is correct then I can say it is proved!  What a grand ride, I felt good the whole ride, even when the wind was in my face which it was about half the ride around 15 miles per hour gusting to 20.  Near the end of the ride I thought about just riding over the Atlantic Beach Bridge and going out to Fort Macon and back but decided not to push it for the first ride.

2006.01.13.FRI.PM - (Lake Lynn Walk) The VO2-MAX reading is from my new heart-rate-monitor watch.  This watch will compute the Rockport VO2-MAX reading.  You enter your age, weight, sex into the watch and press the 'test' button and it gives you a five minute warm up time then beeps at you.  After one mile you press the stop button and it computes VO2MAX.  I bet if I actually had my VO2MAX computed directly it would be higher, and I think the equations that I find on the web are not correct.  The walk around Lake Lynn is a total of 2 miles.  Here is the route as computed by Google Maps Pedometer.
